POTENTIAL CHILDREN'S CENTRE CLOSURES

Dear Parents, Carers and Partners

Proposed changes to Brookwood and Pirbright Children’s Centre – views needed by 4th January 2019

Many of you may have seen or heard through the local or national press Surrey County Council’s proposal to close the majority of Children’s Centres.  Surrey CC are aiming to improve the services to the County’s most vulnerable families while, at the same time, save a significant amount of money.  Unfortunately, your Children’s Centre here at Brookwood and Pirbright is short-listed to close.

On Tuesday 6th November, Surrey County Council opened their Family Resilience, Phase One – Children’s Centres public consultation. This consultation will close on the 4th January 2019.

We encourage you to give your views about the proposal to close your local centre here at Brookwood and Pirbright.

Below are some key facts to support you when completing the consultation survey. The survey has some questions to answer, but then comments boxes so you can extend your views. The survey can be completed by anyone living or working within Surrey so please pass on the consultation link to friends, family and colleagues.

The proposal is to keep just two out of the six centres in Woking; these will be in Sheerwater and Sythwood.

Reducing the number of Centres means that local families will need to travel further to access services.  As an example, a family living in Brookwood would have to travel 4.8 miles to their nearest Centre.  This could mean taking two bus journeys at the cost of £5.30 per adult.  The effect of this may mean that some families feel more isolated.

In the proposal Surrey CC plans to transfer the responsibility of families living at Pirbright Army Training Centre over to the Guildford Borough.  For Service Families this could mean a journey of over an hour and a half on the bus, at a cost of £5.90 return per adult to reach their nearest Guildford Centre.

Currently health professionals operate all clinics for this area at this Children’s Centre.  These include Well Baby clinics, 6-8 week checks, 2 year checks, sleep workshops and baby-led weaning advice sessions. Breastfeeding advice and support is offered in parallel by the Children’s Centre staff. If this Centre closes, families may need to travel to either Sythwood or Sheerwater to access these services.

For over ten years we have provided a huge range of vital services which are beyond the headline Play and Learn sessions.  We have had a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of families with children from 0 – 5 years.  Our services have included:

Antenatal programmes

First aid sessions
Parent Infant Mental Health baby massage
Breastfeeding support

Please complete the online questionnaire before the 4th January 2019 at https://www.surreycc.gov.uk/consultations to give your view.

The questionnaire can be completed on a mobile phone, laptop or we have hard copies available at the Centre.

The more views the better!

If you require any assistance with filling out the questionnaire or additional information please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your continued support!

____________________________________________________

Dear all,

It has been lovely to see so many old and new faces at our Dads Zone group these past few months.

It is clear the group has become phenomenally busy which is fabulous to see with so many accessing our services and how important they are to you all.

Sadly due to over capacity we have now had to make the decision to say that we are no longer able to have children over the age of five attend.  We are only funded for 0-5 year olds (children up to their 5th birthday) and we need to prioritise space for the under fives that fall within our funding bracket.

If you have any questions regarding the above please do contact me.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Juliea Morris
Children's Centre Manager
